Betty Hodson

All who knew Betty Hodson would agree that she was truly beautiful on the inside and out. She worked hard whether in or out of her home, and her attention to detail was unmatched. A loving wife and devoted mother, Betty was there for whatever her family needed in ways both great and small. She enjoyed so many of the best things that life has to offer, but nothing was better than sharing these experiences with the ones she loved. Life will never be the same without Betty here, but the hearts of so many others will be changed in such a special way because of her touch. Life during the 1930s was anything but easy as the entire decade was cloaked in the hardship of the Great Depression. The crash of the stock market in October of 1929 sent the unemployment rate soaring, sparing very few Americans in the process. Things only became more dire with a drought that covered our nation's heartland for nearly two years during this time. Despite the trials around them, Raymond and Regina (Stepka) McCue were able to shift their focus to a time of great anticipation in their lives as they were eagerly awaiting the birth of their new baby as winter held the city of Muskegon, Michigan, firmly in its grip in December of 1932. Their wait was finally over when they had an extra special gift on Christmas Day, December 25th, as they welcomed their new baby girl, Betty Lou, into the world. She was one of four children in her family as she was raised alongside her siblings, Delores, Raymond, and Lois. Raised on a small farm in Dennison, Michigan, she was a typical young girl of her generation. Betty attended local schools where she also played basketball. New and exciting changes were in store for Betty when she met the young man who would change the course of her life forever. His name was Kalvin Laug, and it didn't take the couple long to fall deeply in love. With a desire to spend the rest of their lives together Betty and Kalvin were married on July 24, 1951. Together they welcomed five children including Greg, Randy, Bryan, Pam, Lesa into their hearts and home. Betty was a strict disciplinarian, but she was also loving, caring, and nurturing. Later in life she was thrilled to become a grandmother, and she had an open door policy when it came to taking care of her grandchildren. Betty was blessed with 12 grandchildren, and through her grandchildren she witnessed her family tree blossom to include 16 great-grandchildren who were the light of her life. In addition to caring for her family, Betty worked outside of the home for many years. She spent 25 years working as a seamstress at General Motors Fisher Body Division before retiring. Later in life Betty continued to embrace the days she was given. Whenever someone needed to get on their feet, she took family in until they were ready to be on their own. On February 24, 1993, Betty married John Hodson, and they lived on Chippewa Lake together. Betty loved baking and cooking, and she always made enough for an entire army! Every year during the Christmas season she made Christmas cookies by the hundreds, and she shared them with anyone and everyone. Betty loved canning pickles, beans, carrots, and anything else she could get her hands on. She took meticulous care of her home, and she always expected a clean house and clothing as well. During her younger years Betty loved bowling. With a life that spanned times of war and times of peace, times of plenty and times of want, Betty Hodson was a blessing to all who were near. She was so genuine, loving, and kind, and with unwavering devotion to her family she was selfless. Betty worked hard, but she enjoyed life, too, making precious memories with friends and loved ones along the way. Dearly loved, she will be forever missed. 5 Kids - Greg Laug & Chris "Cricket" Gorkisch, Randy (Cindy) Laug, Bryan (Sandy) Laug, Pam Laug, Lesa (Robert) Rolfe 12 grand kids, 16 great grand kids
