Lewis A. Huisman

Lewis Arthur Huisman, of Shelbyville passed away on Saturday, April 4, 2020 at the age of 96. Lewis was born on January 18, 1924 in Wyoming, MI. He was the son of Derk and Myrtle (Connor) Huisman. He graduated from Martin High School with the Class of 1941. After high school he served his country in the United States Army and then after it converted to the United States Air Force, During World War II he was awarded the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, EAME Ribbon with four Bronze Stars and the Good Conduct Medal. He was a tech sergeant/flight engineer on a B24 Bomber stationed in England and served in Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. On June 16, 1945 he married Lois Hurdelbrink. And together they had two children: Karen and Steve. After the military he was employed as a meat cutter at Boysen’s IGA in Martin and on the family farm. Then for over 41 years as a meat inspector for the State of Michigan and Federal government. He was proud of the fact that in 41 years in the work force, he only missed two days of work. He was also one of the original firefighters for the Orangeville Twp fire department. In his more recent years, he attended Gun Lake Community Church and Leighton United Methodist Church. Lewis will be missed by all that knew him and will be remembered as loving nature, social, a people person, hard worker, talkative and his love for his family and grandchildren. He is survived by his two children: Karen McCarter, of Millersburg; Steve (Terri) Huisman, of Republic; four grandchildren: Charles Anez, of Belding; Tricia Anez, of Rogers City; LeAnn (Jon) Graban, of Farmington Hills; and Roxann (Chris) Williams, of Escanaba; five great grandchildren: Avery, Taylor, Jordan, James, and Thomas. He is also survived by his special companion Lee Biesbrock, of Shelbyville. He is preceded by his wife Lois in 2012. Lewis will have a graveside burial with his family on Wednesday, at 11am at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Orangeville. The family plans to have a public gathering at a later date.
